Lead the Way Students who are currently enrolled in the WB learning/WEX with FSWCD are now in the field-based learning of the program. Today, we had the opportunity to take a trip to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant. There, we learned that raw sewage enters the building through intake pipes as wide as 14 feet in diameter.

Once there are large, 4-inch grates that capture the biggest objects that flow into the treatment plant. The wastewater continues running through smaller screens which then filtering out plastic toys or whatever else wasn't screened out in the first process. The fine grit is removed and sent to a landfill. The final solids are consolidated and run through anaerobic digesters, which heat the material and feed it to bacteria and microbes that break it down into water, gas and inert material.
