LaTanya Thornton at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium as a Black History Month Panelist

On Tuesday, February 25, we were so excited to have LaTanya Thornton,  Director of Programming at Lead The Way participate in a panel discussion at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium with Dr. Nathan Harris, CEO and Founder of See Brilliance, and Vicky Pate, a Columbus City Schools teacher at Fort Hayes High School.  The discussion was on the significance of Black Labor in the workforce.

Throughout the panel, LaTanya, Dr. Harris, and Vicky discussed the future of work, specifically keeping the current generation in mind. Lead The Way plays a pivotal role in helping shape our future leaders and leans into this Black History Month's theme of African Americans and Labor. During this one-hour panel session, a few important reminders in how we need to show up for our community were:

▪️ Empower people – this was evident in the conversation and something we at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium anchor to as part of our mission.

▪️ Be solution oriented – guidance and ideas are great, and we need to provide options for the future generation that do not add stress to their already stressful lives

▪️ Partnership – establishing and maintaining partnerships is how students will know and understand what opportunities are available

▪️ Collaboration – there are plenty of individuals who need support, so we don’t need to be competing. Through collaboration, we can serve a broader population and meet the needs of our growing community

Thank you to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for the opportunity for Lead The Way to lend our voice to such an incredibly powerful topic!
