Tuesday, November 19, 2024

Groveport Madison High School students, through Lead The Way, participated in their second educational field trip to a water treatment facility, visiting the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant. This hands-on learning experience offered a unique opportunity to explore the critical processes behind wastewater management and the career opportunities within this essential industry.

The tour provided a comprehensive look at wastewater treatment, guiding students step-by-step through the process. Starting with the initial stages of filtration and ending with the final purification phase, students were able to witness how the Southerly Plant ensures treated water meets stringent environmental standards before its release into the Scioto River. One of the highlights of the tour was exploring the underground tunnels, where students saw the intricate systems that drive the purification process.

Beyond technical insights, students learned about the diverse career opportunities available in wastewater management. Doug Dixon, the Wastewater Plant Manager and tour guide, shared valuable information about roles that require no prior experience and offer comprehensive on-the-job training. This accessibility resonated with the students, who were inspired by the opportunities to enter a field with such significant environmental impact.

The students’ enthusiasm was evident as they eagerly took Doug Dixon’s business card, showing a genuine interest in exploring career paths in wastewater management. “It’s amazing to see how such a complex system works and to know there are opportunities for us to be part of something so important,” shared one student.

This field trip exemplifies Lead The Way’s commitment to empowering students through real-world experiences that build knowledge, spark interest, and create pathways for future success. By connecting students with industry professionals and exposing them to essential environmental processes, Lead The Way continues to equip young leaders with the tools and inspiration they need to thrive in their chosen career paths.
