Groveport Madison High School held their first Hispanic Heritage Night this evening, which was an event put on exclusively by the students. It was a night filled with food, music, dancing, and knowledge. The students wanted to create a night that showcased various Hispanic countries, influential individuals, music and so much more.
The night began with various tables and stands filling the gym that offered opportunities of students to learn more about various colleges and volunteering opportunities. There was also authentic Hispanic food being offered as well.
The event that followed began with a power point presentation, showcasing Hispanic individuals that influenced the world through various ways from sports, to music, to health, to LGBTQIA, to science. To name a few, they spoke on Selena Quintanilla, Cesar Chavez, Dr. Antonia Novello and Roberto Clemente. They also spoke on the importance of culture and dates in the Hispanic community.
A Quinceanera demonstration took place. A Quinceanera is a Hispanic tradition of coming-of-age ritual that emphasizes the importance of family, food, religion, and culture. After being led to the stage they had their traditional dance.
This led into the dance portion of the event. The student's showcased various dances from Hispanic countries. They showed off the dances of Cumbia, Bachata, Merengue, Reggaeton and Salsa.
To end the night, they gave a presentation on Dias de los Muertos, Day of the Day. They explained how it is celebrated in Mexico as a way to celebrate those that have passed. They created a traditional altar and dressed in traditional clothes.
It was a night filled with many cultural moments, music, food, and a tradition Groveport Madison high School hopes to continue.
