On Thursday, March 6th, Lead The Way Learning Academy had the exciting opportunity to take 10 students from Cornerstone Academy High School on an immersive field trip to the Independent Electrical Contractors of Central Ohio (IEC) headquarters and training center. This visit offered students a behind-the-scenes look at the electrical trade industry and the many career pathways available to them through pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs.
Exploring Pathways Beyond the Traditional Classroom
Throughout the visit, students met with IEC instructors, administrative staff, and seasoned journeyman electricians who shared insights into the profession and answered questions about their training and day-to-day work. The experience emphasized how careers in the skilled trades—particularly electrical work—offer viable, high-paying alternatives to traditional college paths.
The IEC’s four-year paid apprenticeship is designed for high school graduates seeking a long-term career in the field, while the pre-apprenticeship program serves as an accessible, short-term introduction for high school students curious about entering the trade. Several Lead The Way students have already benefited from participating in IEC’s pre-apprenticeship program, gaining valuable hands-on experience while still in school.
Hands-On Learning Sparks Student Interest
A key highlight of the day was an interactive wiring activity, where students paired up to complete a basic electrical circuit. This engaging challenge not only introduced them to electrical concepts but also promoted teamwork, creative thinking, and problem-solving. For many, this hands-on task was the moment the trade came to life—transforming what might seem like abstract skills into something tangible and achievable.
In addition to technical exposure, students also learned about the broader benefits of pursuing a career in the trades, including earning while learning, the high demand for skilled workers, and the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with mastering a hands-on profession.

Continuing the Conversation: Upcoming Career Fair
For students eager to learn more, the IEC of Central Ohio will be hosting a Career Fair on Friday, March 14th from 2–6 PM at 3128 E. 17th Avenue, Columbus, OH. This is a fantastic opportunity for youth and families to meet industry professionals, explore training opportunities, and take the first steps toward a rewarding career in the trades.
