A Creative Approach to Social-Emotional Learning Students from Groveport Madison High School recently participated in a unique, hands-on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) experience hosted by Kitchen of Life. This interactive baking class focused on the theme of Belonging, encouraging students to reflect on what it means to truly feel connected—to a group, a community, or even to themselves.
Blending Ingredients, Building Connection
Through guided discussion, students were asked to consider where they feel a sense of belonging in their lives. These personal reflections became the foundation for deeper conversation during the baking activity. Just like in life, the class emphasized how combining different "ingredients"—skills, personalities, and experiences—can lead to something unexpectedly meaningful.
Collaboration and Communication in the Kitchen
Students were paired with peers they may not have known beforehand, creating opportunities to develop new communication and teamwork skills. As they followed instructions and measured ingredients together, they also exchanged stories, ideas, and laughter—demonstrating that connection can be found in the most creative spaces.
Trying New Things and Tasting Success
One highlight of the class was the baking of zucchini muffins—a recipe that initially sparked hesitation, but quickly turned into a surprise favorite. Many students were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed the outcome and expressed interest in recreating the recipe at home.
Creating Memories and Building Belonging
By the end of the session, not only had new recipes been tried, but new friendships had formed. Students shared how much they enjoyed the experience and appreciated the chance to try something new in a supportive environment. This SEL-focused baking experience provided a powerful reminder of the value of connection, curiosity, and courage.
