New Albany High School Students Visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Students from New Albany High School recently participated in an exciting career exploration field trip to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, where they gained first-hand insight into the diverse and dynamic career paths available within one of the region’s most well-respected institutions.

Learning From the Experts

From the moment they arrived, students were immersed in a behind-the-scenes look at the many professional roles that keep the zoo running smoothly. Directors from various departments — including sustainability, education, and animal health — took time to share their expertise, offering students a closer look at the operations, planning, and care that go into creating a world-class zoo experience.

Up Close and Interactive

One of the early highlights included an up-close animal encounter inside the welcome center, where students had the opportunity to feed a porcupine and learn about the training and behavior techniques used to ensure the animals are comfortable and thriving in their environment. These moments helped students better understand the importance of empathy, consistency, and science in animal care.

Inside the Zoo’s Animal Hospital

The most memorable stop for many was a visit to the zoo’s animal hospital, where the head veterinarian introduced students to the world of zoological medicine. Students learned about surgical procedures, diagnostic tools, and the specialized training required to care for exotic animals — sparking inspiration in those interested in both healthcare and wildlife conservation.

Unexpected Career Paths in Tech and Engineering

Even students interested in fields outside of animal care found inspiration during the visit. Several were surprised to learn how IT, design, and engineering professionals play vital roles at the zoo — developing systems for animal tracking, environmental controls, and innovative habitat designs that enhance animal well-being.

A Day of Discovery and Inspiration

This hands-on, interdisciplinary experience opened students’ eyes to the many career possibilities that exist within the world of animal care, conservation, science, and technology. The visit sparked curiosity, encouraged new ambitions, and highlighted the value of connecting academic learning with real-world application.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for hosting such an engaging and educational experience. Our students returned energized, informed, and excited about the wide range of futures they can pursue.
