Staff Spotlight: Laj’am Wilson

At Lead the Way, our success comes not only from the programs we run but from the passionate people who power them. One of those changemakers is Laj’am Wilson, whose journey into youth development started with an academic revelation and grew into a professional mission.
From Forensic Psychology to Youth Advocacy
After earning her bachelor’s degree in forensic psychology, Laj’am knew she wanted to work with children in the juvenile justice system. Her interest in youth justice sharpened during a college course, where a research project on juvenile sex offenders opened her eyes to the importance of early intervention.
“It made me want to help youth understand their behavior and create lasting change before they reach adulthood,” she says. This led her to Lead the Way, where she began as a Career Coach, guiding students through pathways that matched their passions and potential.
A Dynamic Role in Career Readiness and Operations
Today, Laj’am’s role is anything but one-dimensional. While she continues to support students, her responsibilities have expanded to include payroll processing, data entry into the county compliance system, program compliance tracking, and administrative support for post-secondary advisors.
“There are no typical days,” she laughs. “But I know the information I handle directly supports more opportunities for youth year-round.”
Her time at LTW has not only allowed her to support youth—it’s helped her grow personally and professionally. “Lead the Way has given me transferable skills in every position I’ve held here. One of my proudest moments was when a student mentioned me during their award speech at our anniversary celebration.”
Laj’am also successfully navigated her first county audit—a major achievement that earned LTW a 100% compliance score and preserved crucial funding for student programming. “It was stressful, but we got through it with teamwork, communication, and organization. The process resulted in more stability and opportunity for our youth.”
A Culture of Growth and Support
Laj’am credits the LTW culture—particularly the belief and support of CEO Anthony Murphy—for helping her step into leadership roles. Through intentional mentorship and recognition, she’s been empowered to not only fulfill her duties, but to thrive in them.
“Everyone understands that we’re here for the youth and the community. Our team is full of different strengths, and I’ve learned so much from working alongside them.”
When asked what advice she’d give to someone new to this work, Laj’am doesn’t sugarcoat it. “Be prepared to give your all—your focus, mind, and heart. It’s not always easy, but the results are life-changing.”
Laj’am’s story is a reminder that behind every program statistic is someone deeply invested in the outcome. Her blend of professional skill, lived purpose, and genuine care helps Lead the Way continue to empower youth, build futures, and change lives.
